10. Into the Fire
One of the best true crime documentaries I’ve seen, helped along by one of the best narrators you could ask for. I think she pushes things a little too far at times; but it helped that she ended up being 100% right in the end.
9. Ready or Not
This was a really fun movie. It didn’t do anything wildly original or surprise me in anyway, but it was very comfortable with being the movie it was. A+ on the visuals and the characters.
8. Love Lies Bleeding
I appreciate how sweaty this movie was. I don’t know if I was sold on the closing scene, but I wasn’t mad about it either.
7. The Wild Robot
This was really sweet with some really powerful scenes. It followed some predictable patterns but managed to subvert my expectations at the same time. I’m not always a fan of this style of animation but I thought this look gorgeous and really made good use of the setting and colors. There isn’t much to complain about except that I wash some of the moralizing at the end wasn’t so explicitly stated.
6. What You Wish For
This was a nice and disturbing flick. It’s a good slow build but it builds to a fantastic climax. It also had some pretty wild body horror.
5. Nosferatu
I really appreciate David Eggar’s consistent efforts to deny us sexy versions of horrific things. The visual aesthetics and cinematography in this were stunning. It was a little slow but I was expecting that.
4. Oddity
A good balance of weird and familiar. I never knew where this was going. It had some great cinematography, and did an excellent at job and building/maintaining momentum. My favorite horror movie this year.
3. Dune: Part Two
I was impressed by how the first movie made the most boring part of the book so interesting. They had much better material to work with for this one, and delivered. I love the score and the visual aesthetics, and cannot wait until Part Three.
2. Will & Harper
Funny, moving, powerful. This documentary packs a punch and it tells an incredibly important story. We live in a time where anti-trans backlash is the latest front of the never-ending right wing culture war.
1. All of us Strangers
Beautiful and devastating, All of us Strangers was more haunted than any of the horror movies on this list. It managed to capture an aspect of the queer experience that I don’t think I’ve seen on film before.

I watched a lot of movies this year, at least compared to last year, so there’s a bunch of great and memorable ones I want to pay tribute to.

Our rebooted movie club has soldiered on, with a good range of styles and spanning several decades. This club has been great for getting myself to watch a lo of movies I otherwise wouldn’t have. It’s also lead to some fantastic discussions.
